"Silence! The Court is in Session"
Written by Vijay Tendulkar
 |
The strength of a woman's resolution
has been a subject of Theater since the inception of the written word.
Vijay Tendulkar, a prolific and renowned playwright of vernacular Indian
theater, writing in the language Marathi has left an everlasting impact
on the country's rich theater tradition. To draw a corollary to western
literature in the context of the play under discussion, Henrik Ibsen had
Dora in the Doll House and Vijay Tendulkar has Benare in Silence the
Court is in Session, albeit with a twist.
The protaganist for this play, Leela Benare, is another character in
Tendulkar's stream of consciousness that revolves around strong women
and extenuating circumstances. Through the various characters, who we
will try to transpose on to the stage, the viewer meanders through the
egos, the aspirations, the inadequacies and the triumphs of societal
relationships. It's a journey that goes from a gregarious romp to an
explosive cynosure.
Performed Jan 28, 29, 30 and Feb 4, 2005 at the Esther Simplot Performing Arts Academy Annex
